Tablet Buying Guide 2025
iPad, Android, Windows: which tablet for which purpose.
Tablets: who are they for?
A tablet sits between a smartphone and a laptop. It excels at content consumption (videos, reading, web browsing), digital drawing and as an educational tool for kids. However, it rarely replaces a PC for productive work.
User profiles
Media and reading ($150-350)
Netflix, YouTube, ebooks, web browsing. A 10-11 inch screen with good resolution is enough. Entry-level iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tab A models are the go-to choices in this range.
Drawing and creative work ($400-900)
For digital drawing, handwritten note-taking or photo editing. The iPad Air or iPad Pro with Apple Pencil is the gold standard. On the Android side, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S with S Pen is an excellent alternative.
Productivity ($500-1,500)
Replacing a lightweight laptop for emails, documents and video calls. The iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard or a Surface Pro are the best options. Note: tablet apps remain limited compared to a full PC.
Kids ($100-250)
Durability, parental controls and an accessible price. Amazon Fire Kids tablets and Samsung Galaxy Tab A with cases are designed for this purpose. Prioritize a solid warranty.
Key criteria
Display
Size (8 to 13 inches), resolution and technology (LCD or OLED) are decisive. For media, aim for at least Full HD. For drawing, a laminated display (no gap between the glass and the panel) is essential.
Processor
Apple chips (M1, M2, A15) lead in performance. On Android, Snapdragon 8 series and Dimensity 9000 are excellent. For basic use, a mid-range processor is more than enough.
Storage
64 GB is the bare minimum. 128 GB is recommended, 256 GB+ for creative work and storing large files. Check if a microSD slot is available (absent on iPads).
Battery life
10 hours is the standard. iPads generally deliver on this promise, while Android tablets vary more. Check independent reviews rather than manufacturer claims.
Accessories
Stylus, keyboard, case: they can double the price of the tablet. Factor them into your budget from the start. A generic stylus will never match an Apple Pencil or S Pen in precision.
iPad vs Android: the choice
- iPad: best tablet app ecosystem, superior performance, long-term updates (5-6 years). More expensive, closed ecosystem.
- Android: more price options, expandable storage, more freedom. Tablet apps sometimes less optimized.
- Windows (Surface): closest to a PC, ideal for productivity. Less capable as a pure tablet.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Buying a tablet to replace a PC: except in specific cases, a laptop is more versatile for work.
- Ignoring accessory costs: stylus + keyboard + case can add $200-400 on top.
- Choosing a no-name tablet: security updates are rarely guaranteed.
- Judging by screen size alone: panel quality matters as much as the inch count.
Our recommendation
For media consumption, the 10th-gen iPad (around $350) is unbeatable. For drawing, the iPad Air with Apple Pencil is the benchmark. If you want maximum flexibility at a lower cost, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S FE is an excellent Android alternative.
